Millie Young

I am a Southern girl, wife, mother and grandmother. My hubby, 3 children and I moved from Louisiana to Littleton, near Kipling & Bowles, the southwest part of the Denver metro area in 1980. I worked for a small publishing company for 20 years wearing different hats but spending my last few years in the graphics design department. We moved to Brighton in 2005 to be near our youngest daughter and met Judee Dickinson when first visiting the gallery. Because of her encouragement over the years, I found my way into Sharon Krohn's watercolor class and remained there for four years. It was the perfect place for me to get back in touch with my artistic side other than on a computer screen. I also took watercolor classes from Susie Wheeler who gave me a fresh way to tackle watercolor techniques. But that call back to oils became loud and clear and could no longer be denied so I have reacquainted myself with painting in oils and I am having a ball painting in a medium I had not touched in many years.

As far back as I can remember I loved to draw, color and paint, anything creative, so the artist within me has always been a part of my fiber. I like to think of myself as a weaving, still on the loom; a mixture of colors, bright to subdued; texture: smooth to tactual; and strength: strong and enduring. This explains why I enjoy several mediums; watercolor, oils and color pencils.

Watercolor brings in the light, uniquely transparent but a colorful expression on simple cotton paper. To me, it brings joy into my paintings and some intriguing unpredictability sprinkled with a little humility.

Oils, like strong fibers, can be enduring, forgiving, highly tactile or as smooth as a peaceful lake. Oils can make a bold statement!

Color pencils, in my experience, can stand on its own or enhance a watercolor painting giving it a totally different dimension. Color pencils give an element of total control.

These three mediums have woven me into the artist I am today, one who finds great joy in expressing my love of nature and animals, especially Hummingbirds. I wish for my paintings to bring a moment of reflection but mostly a feeling of joy.

My painting motto is "LIGHT BRINGS FORM TO LIFE" which means my goal is that my paintings look three dimensional. This is easier said than done so my work is cut out for me and that is also what being an artist is all about...always learning and refining!
